What is First?

Founded in 1989 by Dean Kamen, FIRST is an international non-profit organization that focuses on fostering a passion for STEM. The core values of the organization, "friendly sportsmanship, respect for the contributions of others, teamwork, learning, and community involvement", help drive teams and students to create unique and challenging designs, build an interest and love for learning, and most importantly develop lasting and meaningful relationships.

“FIRST is More Than Robots. The robots are a vehicle for students to learn important life skills. Kids often come in not knowing what to expect – of the program nor of themselves. They leave, even after the first season, with a vision, with confidence, and with a sense that they can create their own future.” – Dean Kamen

First Robotics Competition

FIRST Robotics Competition is an international robotics competition for high schoolers that seeks to foster interest and provide real-world experience in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).

Given 6 weeks, teams are tasked to create a robot that fulfills the objectives of each year's competition. Through a rigorous and competitive experience, FIRST students are able to work with mentors and professionals in the STEM field. The FIRST competition builds teamwork, business, leadership, and STEM skills.
